Paywall Index — October 2026

How news sites lock their articles: the 239 outlets our readers tried most, 1–31 Oct 2026 — who tells search engines its articles are paid, who never sends the article, how each wall works, and who turns the Wayback Machine away.

Key findings

  • 180 of the 214 outlets we could check tell search engines their articles are paid — isAccessibleForFree: false in the page's schema.org data, the signal Google asks paywalled sites to give.
  • Outlets in Dutch, French and Portuguese declare it most often: 100% of those we checked, against 74% in English.
  • 9 major outlets never send the article to non-subscribers at all — the server stops after the opening: The Wall Street Journal, The Times, The Washington Post, De Telegraaf, Die Welt, Barron's, Mediapart, Gazeta Wyborcza, Wyborcza Biznes.
  • 7 outlets refused at least half of the Wayback Machine's captures of their front page; 5 answered some with “402 Payment Required”, the pay-to-crawl answer.
  • 106 of the 239 outlets run a hard wall, keeping their articles for subscribers; the others meter them or lock only some.

Outlets that never send the article

Checked from a home connection: these send readers without a subscription only the headline and, at most, the opening — the rest of the article is never sent, so no paywall remover, extension or trick can show it. A public archive is the only route, when one exists.

The Wall Street Journal · The Times · The Washington Post · De Telegraaf · Die Welt · Barron's · Mediapart · Gazeta Wyborcza · Wyborcza Biznes

Who blocks the archives

Public archives are the last free route to an article behind a hard wall, and some publishers turn them away. Of the Wayback Machine's own captures of each outlet's front page in this period, the share the publisher refused: bot protection, a login, or “402 Payment Required”, the pay-to-crawl answer (in brackets). The share moves with how often the Wayback Machine tries: in weeks it crawls heavily, more captures get through, so compare outlets within one month rather than one month with another.

How this is measured

The outlets are the ones our readers tried most: every outlet we track that someone asked us to open 30+ times in the period. Reads only choose the outlets and show how much each was wanted; this edition publishes no success rates. Daily Mail made up 8% of all reads.

Declares a paywall: for each outlet we fetched up to 3 article links readers pasted, from a home connection, and looked for isAccessibleForFree: false in the page's schema.org data. Yes means at least one did; no means none of the 2 or more we could fetch did; a dash means too few could be fetched to say. Only the verdict is kept. Never sends the article: checked from a home connection, the outlet sends non-subscribers only the opening. Wall: how we classify the outlet's wall — hard (subscribers only), metered (some free articles, then a wall) or soft (most articles free). Wayback refused: of the Wayback Machine's own captures of the outlet's front page in the period, the share answered with 401, 403, 429, 451, 503 or 402, from its public capture index.
